Mycopunk Cycler Build: Elemental Reloads, Diffraction Driver and RPM Scaling
Turn Mycopunk's starter SMG into a threat-5 weapon: elemental reloads, Diffraction Driver splash, fire-rate scaling.
The Cycler is the weapon every player starts with, and most players drop it by level 10 for something that looks bigger. That is usually a mistake. The Cycler is a battery-powered SMG with a 20-point base hit at roughly 700 RPM, and in Mycopunk fire rate is a damage multiplier for your upgrade grid, not just for the gun.
Any cell that says "on hit", "per shot", "chance to" or "elemental application" pays out per bullet. A Cycler fires roughly eleven times more often than a heavy weapon. The build below is what that maths looks like when you commit to it.
Two things make the Cycler special
Elemental reload variants. The Cycler rolls reload variants that change its damage type — fire, acid, shock. This matters because mission modifiers rotate elemental resistances weekly, and a Cycler player can simply re-roll their damage type instead of rebuilding.
Diffraction Driver. This upgrade adds a halo of splash around your shots. On a slow weapon it is a small area-damage bonus. On a Cycler it turns every burst into a cone, which means you clear trash without aiming and your on-hit effects proc on secondary targets too.
Take Diffraction Driver in every Cycler build. It is the reason the weapon scales.
Cell layout
| Slot | Cells | Function |
|---|---|---|
Diffraction Driver |
3 | Turns single-target into cone |
Ammo Processor |
3 | Fire-rate uptime, the Cycler's bottleneck |
| Elemental affinity | 2 | Match the week's damage type |
| On-hit damage Epic | 3 | Scales per bullet |
Reinforced Plating |
1–2 | Floor |
Liquid Cooling |
3 | Ability uptime, optional |
| Fillers | 4–6 | Standards |
Note what is not on the list: damage-per-shot Epics. The Cycler's problem is never the size of one hit; it is ammunition and uptime. Build for time-on-target and the numbers take care of themselves.
Why Ammo Processor is not optional
The Cycler runs dry faster than any other primary, and a dry Cycler is a dead build. Ammo Processor is a three-cell Epic, which is expensive, but it converts directly into continuous fire and therefore into every per-shot effect on your board.
If you cannot find it, the Rare ammo cells are a stopgap. Do not run a Cycler past Treacherous without one of them.
Elemental rotation, week by week
The Cycler's reload variants are the only mid-run answer to elemental modifiers:
| Modifier you see | Reload to | Why |
|---|---|---|
Rot, Corrosive Coating |
Shock | Acid-resisting enemies tend to be weak to shock |
Electrified, Conductive Machinery |
Acid | Shock resist is common on the same week |
Burn, Overheated Cores |
Fire or Acid | Match the cores, not the enemies |
Fungal Workout |
Any | Modifier buffs enemies, not resistances |
Load into a mission, check the modifier list on the deployment screen, choose the variant before the drop. This is a 30-second decision that is worth more than an Epic cell.
Pairing with employees
- Wrangler — the best pairing.
Eyes Up Hereamplifies every bullet, and the Cycler's fire rate means the amp is always applied. - Glider — the solo loop. Damage output restores flight, and a fast weapon restores more of it.
- Bruiser — fine, but the Cycler's range profile fights at the same distance as your cube walls, which is awkward.
- Mycologist — poor. DoT builds want to stop firing; the Cycler wants to never stop.
When to drop the Cycler
Three situations:
- Boss phases at Deadly+. Single-target burst beats sustained fire when the window is short. Switch to Trident S2 for the boss, keep the Cycler for the room.
Bullet Hellweeks. You cannot out-fire projectile density. A heavier weapon with fewer exposure windows is safer.- Interiors with long sightlines and few enemies. The cone from
Diffraction Driveris wasted when there is nothing to splash.
The Cycler is a room-clearing weapon, not a boss weapon. Build both if your grid allows two primaries — most boards do not, so pick per mission.
Leveling order
- Levels 1–12: Cycler plus whatever standards drop. Take
Reinforced Platingearly. - Level 13: infuse
Diffraction Driverlarge. 2.0.2 made large-pattern infusion the strongest single damage step available, and this cell benefits twice — from stats and from splash. - Levels 14–18:
Ammo Processorabove everything else. - Level 19+: elemental affinity, then the on-hit Epic.
- Level 25+: rim standards, and keep one spare reload variant of each element in storage.
FAQ
Is the Cycler viable at Predicament? As a room weapon, yes, with a Bruiser partner holding space. As a solo Predicament weapon, no — the damage ceiling is too low.
Which elemental variant is best? Whichever the week's modifiers are not resisting. There is no permanently best element; the weapon tier list explains why.
Does Diffraction Driver stack with elemental reloads?
Yes. The halo applies your damage type, so the two upgrades compound rather than compete.
Why do I keep running out of ammo mid-fight?
You are missing Ammo Processor. The Cycler's base magazine is designed to be a problem you solve with a cell.
