Mycopunk Ouroboros Guide: Routing the Roguelike Mode to Room 28

Routing Mycopunk's Ouroboros: a boss every four rooms, the room 28 finale, Contraband rewards and what carries out.

Last Updated: 2026-10-24

Ouroboros is Mycopunk's roguelike mode, and it is the one place where your beautifully tuned level 30 board does not exist. Upgrades are wiped at the start and rebuilt inside the run.

That design decision makes it either the best mode in the game or the most frustrating, depending entirely on whether you enjoy solving a build from scratch.

How the mode works

  • Unlocks at level 5, though it is not realistically playable there.
  • Your upgrades are wiped. You start with nothing and find cells during the run.
  • A boss every four rooms. Rooms 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, and the finale at room 28.
  • Contraband cells exist only here. They are stronger than standard cells and cannot leave the mode.
  • Rewards on completion: Gats, Contraband Gats, and random upgrades for your main board.

The wipe is the whole point. Ouroboros tests whether you understand why a build works, not whether you copied one.

The routing decision

Because a boss comes every four rooms, the run has a natural four-beat rhythm:

Rooms Priority
1–4 Establish a damage source. Nothing else matters yet
5–8 Add uptime — reload, rate, or a second damage cell
9–12 Add one defensive layer
13–16 Fill dead space with cheap standards
17–20 Specialise toward the boss types you have seen
21–24 Push damage; the finale is a DPS check
25–28 Stop taking risk. Bank the run

The most common failure is over-investing in rooms 1–8 on a defensive cell you do not need yet, then arriving at the room 28 boss with a survivable but toothless board.

Build priorities inside the run

  1. Damage first, always. Rooms 1–8 do not threaten a competent player; they just take time.
  2. Uptime over burst. You cannot predict boss types, and uptime never has a bad matchup.
  3. One defensive layer, not two. Two is a wasted cell slot in a mode where cells are scarce.
  4. Cheap standards as filler. Fill dead space rather than leaving it — 1-cell cells exist for exactly this.
  5. Contraband when offered. It is strictly better and you lose nothing outside the mode.

Boss handling

Each boss at rooms 4/8/12/16/20/24 uses the same archetypes you know from standard missions, at lower scaling. The finale at 28 is the real check.

Practical rules:

  • Do not spend the pre-boss room clearing optional content. Health and ammo are the resource; time is not.
  • Learn the arm priority. Autocannon-type arms first, area denial last — same logic as the Amalgamation fight.
  • Keep one escape. Every boss room punishes being cornered.

What carries out

Only Gats, Contraband Gats, and random main-board upgrades leave the mode. Contraband cells do not. That is worth stating plainly because a lot of players farm Ouroboros expecting it to upgrade their main build — it does not.

What it does do is give you a repeatable source of random upgrades, which is useful once your board has space to fill.

Is it worth playing?

Yes, if you like build craft and want a mode where knowledge beats gear. No, if you want to progress your main character faster than mission farming.

Mission farming at threat 5–6 pays 200–216 XP per clear and takes ten minutes. Ouroboros takes far longer per reward. The farming guide has the efficient loop.

FAQ

What level do you unlock Ouroboros? Level 5, though it is not practical until much later.

How many rooms does Ouroboros have? 28, with a boss every four rooms and the finale at 28.

Do upgrades carry over? No — your board is wiped at the start of each run.

Do Contraband cells leave the mode? No. They are Ouroboros-only.

What is the best build in Ouroboros? Uptime-based damage plus one defensive layer. Burst builds are unreliable because boss types vary.
