Mycopunk Leveling Guide: Fastest Route to Level 30

The Mycopunk XP table by threat, which missions pay best per minute, and when to stop grinding and start climbing.

Last Updated: 2026-10-24

Level 30 is where a Mycopunk board stops growing and starts being a build. Getting there takes longer than the campaign suggests, and the fastest route is not the one the mission list offers first.

This guide is about XP per minute, not XP per mission.

The XP table

Most missions pay the same amount at a given threat:

Threat Standard missions Regulated Rampage
1 Safe 100 65
2 Risky 125 82
3 Perilous 150 98
4 Treacherous 175 114
5 Deadly 200 130
6 Onslaught 216 140

Two things to notice.

The curve flattens hard. Threat 5 to threat 6 is a 16 XP difference — 8% — for a substantially harder mission. If you can clear Deadly reliably, the XP argument for Onslaught is weak.

Regulated Rampage is a trap. It pays ~35% less at every tier, and it offers no objective work to level during. It is the best build-test mission and the worst leveling mission in the game.

The fastest route

Short version: run standard missions at the highest threat you clear without dying, and skip Rampage entirely.

Longer version, by level band:

Levels Threat Mission focus
1–8 Risky Anything; learn the maps
9–13 Perilous Standard missions, prioritise Cleanup Detail
14–20 Treacherous Fast missions — Saxonite Transport, Cleanup Detail
21–27 Deadly Whichever mission you clear fastest
28–30 Deadly, then Onslaught Push threat only if clear speed holds

The reason Cleanup Detail and Saxonite Transport dominate the mid-game is mission length. Both have a straightforward objective and a short extraction path, so the XP lands sooner. Planetary Defense and Prized Possession have hold phases that cannot be skipped.

What actually slows people down

Three specific mistakes account for most slow leveling:

  1. Over-threating. Running Onslaught at 180 XP/min of deaths is worse than Treacherous at 175 XP per 8-minute clear. Clear speed beats payout.
  2. Chasing upgrades instead of XP. Upgrades come from play regardless; a level is a permanent cell. If you are choosing between a 12-minute loot route and a 9-minute mission, take the mission.
  3. Restarting runs. A failed mission still pays, but a completed one pays more. Play the missions you finish.

Levels that matter

Not every level is equal. These are the ones to plan around:

  • Level 13 — Pattern Infusion unlocks. The single biggest power spike in the game, and the reason banking duplicates from level 10 matters. See the upgrade path.
  • Level 20 — third Epic slot becomes realistic. Builds that need three Epics (Mycologist, most support shapes) come online here.
  • Level 25 — full board. You can fit a complete build with rim fillers; from here, upgrades are refinements.
  • Level 30 — the cap. Boards stop growing, which is also when Ouroboros and Abomination Assault become the progression.

Does threat change XP per kill?

Mission XP is awarded on completion and dominates the total, so kill XP is a rounding error. Do not choose a weapon for kill XP.

Leveling a second employee

Upgrades are universal cells, so your level and board carry across employees. That means:

  • You can switch characters freely to test builds.
  • The fastest way to level a fresh employee is to run your best mission at your best threat on the new character — not to drop back to Risky.
  • Expect one or two deaths while you relearn movement; the XP loss is smaller than the time cost of slow missions.

The efficiency check

Before you queue a mission, ask three questions:

  1. Can I clear this threat without dying more than once?
  2. Is this mission one of the short ones?
  3. Am I on the character I actually want to level?

If the answer to any is no, the queue is wrong. The farming guide applies the same logic to upgrade drops rather than XP.

FAQ

What is the level cap in Mycopunk? 30. Boards stop growing at the cap.

Is Onslaught worth it for XP? Only if you clear it as fast as Deadly. The payout difference is 16 XP.

Do missions give more XP for optional objectives? Mission XP is fixed by threat; optional work pays in currency and drops, not XP.

What should I do at level 30? Ouroboros and Abomination Assault become the progression, and threat 6–7 clears become the benchmark. See the endgame guide.
